A long and historical relationship with Tennessee State University began in the early 1920’s with the earliest known graduates receiving their degrees in 1925. (Herbert Harrison, Grand Junction; Elma Motley and Bessie Walton, Whiteville; Samuel Eli Jones, and Lorenzo Miller, Bolivar). Since 1925 a steady stream of Hardeman County students matriculated at Tennessee State University.
Hardeman County Chapter has a rich history of involvement with the University. This history includes natives of Hardeman County and graduates from other areas who started their careers in Hardeman County.
University History
Hardeman County and its relationship with Tennessee State University originated in the 1920’s. While many recognized the need for an education beyond the eighth grade, very few opportunities were available. During this early period, the agricultural and industrial state normal school (TSU) offered the opportunity to attain a high school diploma. Established in 1912 as a normal school for Negro’s, we are appreciative that a select group of individuals ventured to Nashville and enrolled seeking to gain a high school diploma and a treasured college degree.
Some of the early pioneers who were brave or fortunate enough to travel by bus or train to Nashville and enroll and received degrees were: Myrtle Robertson 1930 Home Economics; Samuel Jones 19, Agriculture; Lorenzo Miller 1927, agriculture; Elma Motley 19, Home Economics; Evelyn Robertson, Sr. 19 , Agriculture; Herbert Pratt 1934, Agriculture; Ned Rawls 1931, Agriculture; Bessie Walton 1929, Home Economics; Andrew Williams 1938, Agriculture; Theodore Woods 1938, Agriculture; James H. White 1932, Principle Allen White High School, President of Lane College, Founding President of Mississippi Valley State. We realize that our compilation of students from Hardeman County is not absolute, it must be noted that proportionately we have been a significant source of quality students for TSU.
